I recently ordered NEC USB floppy drive so I could finally go through all my old disks, keep what I want and get rid of them. Plus I figured since I do some IT stuff on the side it'd be good to have in my kit. When I plug it in and pop a disk in it mounts just fine (with a floppy icon no less!) in the Finder. I had no issues opening files or copying them to my MBP's HD. The problem is when I eject the disk and put in another it won't be recognized until I unplug and replug the drive. My MBP is a 2.16 C2D running 10.5.2. I'll have to try it on my G5 and Windows box tomorrow and see if they have the same issue.

Funny this should come up.

We are finally updating the 'office' systems in my area, but we still have data systems in our test sets that write to floppy drives. We ordered a USB floppy drive just so we could still get to the data. (We are very much a schizophrenic company.
Leading edge technology in some areas, and the very best of 1970's technology elsewhere.) It didn't even occur to me to try and hook it up to my MBP. At work, we're primarily Windows, a little Unix/Linux, but virtually no Macs.
I'm still running 10.4.11. Re: topic - nah, I just use my Quadra when I need to get stuff from floppies because it has a real floppy drive that ejects disks when you drag them to the Trash, not that crap that makes you eject the disks manually. I had a USB floppy drive with my G3 iMac, but I eventually gave up on it because trying to use a PC-style floppy drive with the Mac OS was a pain.
OS 9 would pop up a dialog telling me the computer was done with the disk and I could remove it, after using the Eject command, but in OS X I had to make sure I ejected the disk at the right time because OS X would just re-mount it if I waited too long. And from time to time the problem the OP mentioned where the floppy drive would stop recognizing disks until I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in would happen. I wished someone would make a USB auto-eject floppy drive, but now I have an older Mac with a proper Mac floppy drive so I don't worry about it. I remember in the late '90s/early 2000s when there were all these USB floppy drives designed to match the iMac. Well if they're made for iMacs, why do they behave like PC floppy drives?
Not my problem anymore, fortunately.
