Mock up some cabinets or boxes and put them in the space in your kitchen to make sure it works for you. People underestimate the space needed between objects. The Ikea online planner is great to visualize and get a shopping list for your new kitchen, but it doesn’t do a great job of showing how your kitchen will feel when you add all those cabinets, countertops, and appliances. Many times I’ve gone in and installed from someone’s design and the physical layout is more cramped or simply doesn’t work in the actual kitchen because a door opens the other way, the opening feels more cramped with all the new cabinets. Going through this process, you might have to change your design, but you’ll save time, money, and frustration by testing out your new design now instead of when I’m installing it.

Has anyone ever used the online kitchen planner to do your planning without going into the store? I'm about ready to pull my hair out. Sometimes I can get cabinets and appliances to rotate but sometimes they won't rotate. It sticks wall cabinets in odd corners and then because they can't rotate they can't be moved to the appropriate place. I can get the ranges to rotate but not the cooktops.

The hoods don't show up on the planner at all. I place my cursor over the cooktop and the little arrows appear and turn green but it won't rotate. And then sometimes the wall cabinet turns red along with the base cabinet and they can't be separated so if I try to move the wall cabinet it moves the base cabinet too. I guess this is the universe's way of reminding me of my decision that we weren't getting new cabinets this year.:).

It generally works just fine for me but I do notice that sometimes it's more laggy and glitchy than other times. I suspect it might have to do with how much traffic is on the site at that time. I also notice that some hoods disappear and don't show up (although they will be in the materials list) and other hoods appear just fine. So you need to find out which ones show up and use those even if it's not the style you really want; just better for planning purposes. If an upper/lower are linked together, you just click on them a few times and then un-couple. Or you can go into the little drop-down menu and un-couple them (or un-join or whatever term it is Ikea uses, it's easy to recognize the term).

Save a lot when using it. Like every time you make any kind of major change.

Sometimes it locks up and won't save. You'd rather lose 3-5 minutes of work than an hour's worth. I use Chrome and sometimes the Ikea Planner works great, fast, smooth, does everything I want it to. Sometimes it's so draggy, glitchy and all-around sucky that I leave and just try again later. Sometimes it's OK if I reboot. Sometimes it's still awful after rebooting. Sometimes I can't even get in.

Sometimes I get in and it's working great to all of a sudden start sucking. So I suggest rebooting and trying again. If that doesn't work, come back later. Eventually, it will work fine again. And save, save, save!

I am feeling the exact same way and was wondering if it was just me. It is so infuriating that it honestly makes me want to forget it altogether and go work with a designer. The amount of HOURS I have spent on this thing is ridiculous. Every day I try again hoping it might be better with no luck. My problem is that it takes almost 5 minutes for a cabinet to show then when it does, half the time I can't even move it. So I delete it to start again and wouldn't ya know.

It won't go away. I really think they need to design better software. I am on it right now unfortunately.
