My spell check in Word no longer recognizes obvious spelling errors. I have (a) rebooted and rebuilt the directory (with Disk Warrior); (b) checked and double checked the Custom Dictionaries; (c) turned spell checking off and on again. It worked perfectly fine until a couple of days ago. I was stunned to see that it suddenly ceased to catch errors - a problem as I have been sending out a lot of letters. I am a very good speller, but I've been dashing things off, and counting on Word's spell check to watch my back.

Does anyone have any idea what's happening? Perhaps a complete reinstall of Office?

Slow down a little:-) I realize the significance of the issue but you're on the verge of starting World War III to resolve a parking violation:-) First of all, confirm that Office 2016 is fully updated. Version 15.16 is what you should have. If not go to Help Check for Updates in order to get the software current.

Confirm that you installation of OS X is fully updated, as well. Restart the Mac after installing any updates, and if using OS X 10.10.5 run Disk Utility to repair disk permissions before restarting.

If those steps don't resolve the matter please provide a clearer, more detailed description of the situation. Some additional info would be useful as well. Are you referring to Check spelling as you type (aka, Automatic Spelling Checker) only? What if you run the main Spelling Checker from the Tools menu or from the Status Bar?.

What happened on your Mac 'a couple of days ago'? Even if it doesn't seem related, moving files, deleting them, installing/removing software, etc. Can have a potential impact. Is it missing certain words or is it not marking anything at all? Please provide full details as well as examples. Please fully describe your 'Custom Dictionaries'.

What languages are ascribed to them?. Often, it's a matter of the document content. Usually, what appears to be a failure of the automatic spelling/grammar checking feature usually is due to the Language formatting of the text itself. What actually happens is that if the text is tagged as being a language for which Word does not have Proofing Tools, the text simply is not checked. Another possibility is that the text has been flagged to not be checked.
